The Solar Power House

Nuclear fusion at the sun’s core creates energy, released in the form of light. The sun’s light takes an 8½ minute trip to the earth – even though we’re 93 million miles apart.

Herding the Electron Flow

Pathways created in the solar panels harness moving electrons, acting like a waterslide and forcing the energy where you want it.

Solar Panels= Electron Playgrounds

Solar panels contain two layers of carefully grown silicon slices with a uniform pathway in between. Energetic electrons in the negatively charged top layer are itching to jump to the positively charged bottom; all they need is a little push in the right direction.

Plugging In

An open solar panel is generating quite a bit of energy; the key is to harness that power and put it to good use. Placing a battery in the middle of the electron waterslide allows you to collect and store energy – which charges your battery.

Think of it like solar billiards. Visible and invisible light from the sun hits the top-layer electrons like a cue ball, and gives them the push they need to break loose and race toward the bottom layer, creating a current as they move.

Q: Can I chain a Boulder 50 or 100 with older Boulders?

A: Two part answer. Yes, you sure can chain the Boulder 50 and 100 with older Boulders that have the blue-ringed 8mm connector (Bounder 15, Boulder 30). If you are the proud owner of a Boulder 90 Solar Panel with its MC4 Connector, you’ll want to ensure you have an MC4 to 8mm adapter, as well as an Anderson Power Pole Combiner Cable. In fact, any instance when you’re chaining more than 150 watts of solar panels together (ex. Boulder 100 with two or more Boulder 30s), we recommend using the Anderson Power Pole Combiner Cable. For more help with chaining your solar panels, give our solutions center a call.

Q: What can I charge directly from the Boulder Solar Panels?

A: All of our Boulder Solar Panels are designed to charge Sherpa Power Packs and Goal Zero Yeti Portable Power Stations. If you’re looking to recharge things like headlamps, phones, and other USB devices, check out our foldable Nomad Solar Panels.

Q: How long will it take to charge my Goal Zero Yeti from a Boulder Solar Panel?

A: That depends on a few factors – how big the Yeti, how big the Boulder, how cloudy it is, how hot it is, just to name a few. We’ve created a handy calculator that takes all of these factors into consideration. Also, great news, all the Yetis allow for something called “pass-through power”, this means you can be trickle charging your Yeti and using it to power your gear, all at the same time.

Q: Can I mount the Boulder Solar Panels to my roof?

A: Sure can. We designed the new Boulders to work with traditional Z Brackets so they’re easier to install. Pairing a Boulder Solar Panel and Goal Zero Yeti Portable Power Station for a camper or van? Talk about a match made in heaven.
