Let me first start by saying that the newest iteration of the Sherpa50 is superior in almost all respects to the old Sherpa 50. Be that the smaller form factor, the use of Li-ion over Li-Po, and the products adaptability to your everyday life. The new Sherpa50 has almost everything. To make this review a little more readable to the masses, I'll start out with my impressions of this device, and the results of months of stress testing I imparted on this battery pack. And once the basics are out of the way, I'll lay down some of the technical information which people like me will find important.

Based on how I rated this product, I'm sure you can guess I'm quite happy with the Sherpa50's performance and form factor. Having extensively used the older (and much larger) brother to the new Sherpa50, the newest version leaves my school bag, and backpack lighter, and with more space. Yes, the new Sherpa50 is half the weight, and takes up only 48% of the volume of the older version. This may not be important for everyone, but I don't have to tell those who backpack, or have to haul things on their person (bag, purse, pocket, whatever) how important a pound+ savings can be. Normally such an accomplishment comes at a cost, but not this time.

So, what are some of the changes made? The biggest would be the changeover to laptop cells (6x 18650's, vs. 3 large LiPo's), and a much more compact circuit design. But GoalZero didn't just stop by making the product smaller; they added a beefier USB port (1.5A vs 0.5A, and yes, this thing charges iPads, and Smartphone's with ease), a cleaver attachable inverter (sold separately, though worth picking up), the addition of a laptop port (you can't use the laptop and 12v port simultaneously), and an LED light.

The new Sherpa50 now comes with a regulated 12v port to keep some of your electronics happier. And I found total output to be fairly consistent with varying loads. But I did notice that the new design is a little less efficient when charging under solar power (requires more solar energy to acquire the same state of charge). There are also more apparent safeties built into this model. For the most part, these are good, because they not only protect you from a failure, but also extend the life of the device by limiting the amount of damage you can do to the cells. But under heavy loads, especially while charging from solar, I could trigger the thermal safety cut-off, completely disconnecting any external charge coming in. The older version of the Sherpa50 was less temperate on this issue, but on the same note, the older version appears to be degrading faster when it comes to maintaining maximum capacity.

So, how has the new battery worked for me? Well, its main use has been powering my laptop (through the use of the attachable inverter) on an almost daily basis. In many instances I've used the new Sherpa50, with a few Nomad13's, to keep my laptop powered throughout the day without a plug in sight. Using the Sherpa50 to power your iPad (or other tablet) basically equates to 10-20hrs of use (depending on model) before even touching your internal battery. And if keeping your phone charged for days away from the city is important, well, look no further.

So, here comes the technical stuff. First, I'd like to talk about the advertised capacity. Under a 1C discharge, initial capacity showed 51wh (±1.8wh), which is slightly above those quoted by the company (the original Sherpa50 only gave 43wh under similar testing). And with close to 60-70 discharge cycles now on this pack, it still shows a capacity of 47wh. Though data on the specific LG cells used by GoalZero are unavailable, similar models show an expected drop-off of 80% after 300 cycles, putting my results closely in line of a linear model. Cells come in a standard series parallel (3-3.7v series, 2 sets in parallel) configuration, using quality cells. Because the cells are charged to about 90% of their total capacity, there will be some degradation over the long haul (the ideal standard is to only use 65% of total capacity for longest life). But having designed/built a battery pack under similar parameters as GoalZero for the solar car of our University, we found longevity of the cells to be only a minor issue.

To wrap up this review, the new Sherpa50 follows in the footsteps of its older brother. But the newest offering gives you more features in a lighter, smaller form factor, making this battery perfect for almost everything. Capacity in my testing has also increased by 18%, while battery safeties are maintaining that capacity longer. I really liked the old Sherpa50, but this new one I just love, that's about all I can say.

Charges an iphone 5, and drops down to 20%, then I recharge for hours up to 100%, recharge the same iphone and power drops down to 80%, then I plug in my ipad to charge it, and it drops down to 10%. Its a very inconsistant battery, and the charge times are across the board. I've seen it charge my phone three or four times, and then some days I only get one charge out of it. I've plugged in my laptop for about 2 minutes then dies.

the cables are not good for low temperatures.
the battery has to be heated otherwise the solarpanel does not load the accu. we had to use a hot waterbottle for the sherpa. a second usb would be nice.
will take the sherpa for the next expedition again because there is nothing similar.

Very useful and handy to have in many situations. Travel, around the house, backpacking, motorcycle camping.

My truck broke down in western Kansas just as a blizzard was coming through. The freeway was closed up ahead and I had no way to get to a hotel on my own. My phone was just about dead so I plugged into the Sherpa 50 and was able to alert my family as well as contact the local Sheriff's office for a ride to a hotel 30 miles down the road. At worst my life was in danger, at best it would have been a truly awful night in below freezing temperatures inside my truck.

Goal Zero products have come in handy plenty of times, but this time I was truly grateful to have the Sherpa 50 along for the ride.

The design is quite simple: Plug it in to solar or wall power, and you have an honest 50 Wh at your disposal, once charged. The build quality is very good, but there is always room for improvement. I wish that were slightly more rugged for serious outdoor use. Also, it really needs to be at least water-resistant.

Other than that, it is a great product!

I use this adv motorcycle riding AND camping. Great for recharging my small GPS and for lights in the tent. I will also use it as an emergency backup for home use so they are mostly always charged and ready to go-I have yet to find a pack that is as small and robust as this one.

The Sherpa 50 is a great tool to have on hand for emergencies. Built in LED light, USB port to charge a small device, built in power adapter to charge a laptop. My 13" MacBook Air can get a couple hours of extended use. I have two of these units and left one with family during Hurricane Sandy, and it was a relief knowing that they could at least keep their phones charged if power went out. I use these primarily when photographing remotely with multiple Nomad 27 and 13.5 units.

Keep it out of the sun when charging if you can help it, just tuck it under the solar panels and you'll be good. I also try not to charge my MacBook air off of the unit while it is charging in the sun in a warm environment, as the power adapter on my Mac will get hot, the power inverter fan kicks on in the Sherpa, and if the Air is running, that fan turns on, as well.

A must have in remote environments, for emergencies, great for use on a train or plane with a notebook, as well.

Found myself at the florida earthskills gathering my camper and truck have solar and we had alot of people wanting to charge there phones and the kitchen needed lights to cook with and a square dance that needed lighting. In comparison between the 4 different solar systems the goal zero equipment worked better than all the rest. We had the nomad 7 and the 27 working from sun up to sundown they were put together with the sherpa 50 and the guid 10 plus, if i would of had better cables and more usb ports i am sure we could of kept up with everyone. Thank you goal zero, BTW we charged so many devices that weekend that our own phones were dead but throwing the nomad 7 on the dash of the truck took care of that.

  Thanks for contacting Goal Zero! You can definitely charge the Sherpa 50 with the Nomad 7 however you would need to purchase an additional 4.7mm extension cable to have a cable act as an output to connect to the Sherpa 50 with it's provided adapter that converts the plug size from 4.7mm to 8mm

  The panel's output has to be in the range of 15-25V (30W max). The panel would have to connect with a 8.0 mm charging port cable to the Sherpa. Goal Zero does not have any cables or adapters for aftermarket panels nor gives guidance an DIY projects.

I just received my Sherpa 50, I see there is a cable with a female cigarette terminal on one end and the other end goes to the input of the Sherpa 50. How do I charge the unit in my car? will I need to buy a cable with a male cigarette terminal on both ends? Shouldn't the female cigarette terminal be a male terminal instead? I cannot find one in the package I received.

I am still trying to figuring out my issue with Nomad 13 solar panel not charging my Sherpa 50. The charging input ports (8.0mm, blue circle) show on the website 15-25v (30W max). I have installed my Nomad 13 panel in my bedroom window and it shows around est. 17.0 volt plus or minus depending on the day but all I get is a input blue ring that is flashing with no LCD indicator showing the next charging level. I have taken the Nomad 13 outside in direct sunlight and partially covered the panels to kind of show the minimal amount of voltage the Sherpa 50 would take in order to start showing both the blue ring flashing and the LCD indicator show my next charge level. I am estimating around 18 volt when the Sherpa 50 would start charging to the next level. Could this be a problem with my Sherpa 50? Is 15 volt the minimum charging level Sherpa 50 would start charging to show both blue ring and LCD showing the next charging level?

  First thing about solar panels, the worst kind of performance is putting it behind a a window either house or vehicle. They have UV protection and cannot get the the best amount of sun hitting the panels. The Sherpa does require a minimum voltage of 15V to charge the device "fully". It will accept a lower voltage but, in order to get the battery to a full capacity it will need more voltage.

  You need to look at the wattage of your CPAP machine to match up the right solar solution. Take the number of watts and multiply by sleep length, i.e., 8. That is how many watts you need for one night. Whatever panels you have will recharge the power pack. Take the wattage of the panels times sunlight, i.e., 8, 10 or whatever. That is how much energy gets put back in the power pack. The Sherpa produces 75 watts, which would probably be less than an hour of running a CPAP machine.

I often work at outdoor festivals running low wattage wickless candles for scent diffusion and for making chocolate/cheese fondue. The largest capacity bulbs we use are 25W, but I need to be able to power as many as 12-15W bulbs and 2-3 25W bulbs at one time. What unit would give me a satisfactory delivery of adequate power for 6-10 hours at a time powering this much wattage?

  You are looking at using a total of 255 Watts. And wanting to run that for 6-10 hours? Our battery packs go by Watt hours so, 255/1250 (Yeti 1250, our biggest battery generator) will run that for 5 hours. Adding another external battery to the Yeti 1250 will allow run time to 10 hours.

  At the minimum you'll need the Extreme 350 Power Pack. The manufacturer does not offer many exact estimates of usage times due to the vast differences between powered devices, but based on the wattage you need, the Extreme 350 Power Pack is the smallest pack you can use.

Q:
Had the new model Sherpa 50 for under a month and just got the recently available laptop charging kit in today.

Looks like the laptop port is only putting out 4.8 volts. 12v port seems fine, but the laptop port output voltage is not 19 volts. I've checked the directions and switch settings.

Anyone else with this problem? All other ports seem to be fine.

  You want to make sure you are measuring from the outer barrel to the inner barrel (not to the center pin) when getting a reading.

I am looking to invest in my first solar experience. I live in Minnesota, enjoy camping (mainly BWCA where I don't have power capability), yet like to have the capability to charge my electronics. What would be your recommendation for what I would need? This is really new to me. I would like to have something that would last. The types of electronics I bring are my IPHONE 5, a Samsung Galaxy S3, Jawbone jambox, a gps, and a portable depth finder (for fishing) that takes 4AA batteries.   Batteries are always replaceable, but replacing the 6 18650's inside the Sherpa 50 is beyond the ability of the normal Joe (requires tab welding, and soldering). The actual battery pack can be unplugged from the unit itself (you'll have to separate the temperature probe first), and it's possible to have someone rebuild the battery for you, or maybe contact Goal Zero for a possible replacement.

  For about two hours on the battery storage alone. And with two Boulder 15s panels for charging can keep it topped off if the Ham Radio doesn't pull more than it can charge the Sherpa.

Hello, I have recently purchased Goal Zero 42004 Sherpa 50 Silver Portable Recharger with Inverter and the Goal Zero 12003 Black Nomad 13 Solar Panel. I am having problems charging my Sherpa 50 with the Nomad 13 solar panel. When I charge the input port of the Sherpa 50 with the switching power supply or with a 12volt car adapter, I get a flashing blue ring and the LCD indicator showing the next bar which is flashing as well. When I connect it with the Nomad 13 solar panel I just get a flashing blue ring. The LCD indicator is not flashing at all. Could this be a problem with my solar panel or my Sherpa 50? I have check the voltage out of the solar panel connection and it shows around 17.3 volts.

  The shepa 50 has a laptop port where you could hook up your macbook. You also have the option to plug in your power supply to the Sherpa 50 but you will need an AC inverter.
