I hang the solar panel in a south window of my home. I'm charging battery pack during the day, and charging Iphone4, iPod4, iPod5, 1st generation iPad at nights, also panel charges all the above fully except the 1gen iPad (which can take up to a day-2day for full charge).

I'm a wilderness firefighter, I find myself using this product mostly to charge my headlamp batteries during the day for night use. However I find no matter how long I leave my rechargeable batteries to charge with the Nomad 7 they have about 1/3 the life of regular batteries. This product is not very ideal for charging my iPhone 4S. A design feature that would make this product more adapted to being adaptable to more emergency oriented situations would be the ability to be able to put regular batteries in it solely to charge electronics and save the recharged batteries for when the user runs out of regular batteries. The little LED light comes in handy as the metal strap on the opposite end allows the whole device to be hung in a tent and used for light. I encountered a very annoying problem, in temperatures above 100 deg (frequently encountered on a daily basis in the west during the summer), there is a little thermal switch that shuts down the devices ability to both recharge batteries and charge devices.

I've been using this a couple weeks now. It's pretty great for a solar-attached battery charger. Because of that, it's able to accept any wattage that the batteries will take (which is as high as the Nomad 7 gets, 7 watts, more than the 5 watts most USB chargers will deliver). Working in serial between a solar panel and charging a mobile device, it works quite well in charging, either providing enough current the solar panel doesn't, or storing what current the attached device doesn't doesn't use. I've even been able to charge my iPad with it no problem, whether or not it's attached to the solar panel.

My only beef, and this is a slight one, is that once the batteries get full, the charger doesn't seem to realize it if there's another device attached. It works fine if it's only the charger plugged into the solar panel. But if you have another device plugged into it, the batteries will get quite warm/hot once they get full. This can damage the batteries if they overcharge. The charger will blink green once they start to get at or near full charge, so if it blinks red (i.e., the batteries have less than 50% charge), it's in the clear. Again, this is only an issue when a) you have a device plugged into it while attached to the solar panel, b) the device is using less current than the solar panel provides, and c) the batteries are near full (i.e., the charger is blinking green). If the charger is blinking red, or the batteries are cool, or if there's no device plugged into it, it's all fine. The other option around this is to plug the device into the solar panel's USB port (assuming it'll accept the current, not all devices do, particularly if there isn't enough current from the panel), if that's an option.

It works better than anything else I've seen (I haven't tried the Switch 8, mostly because it'll only accept up to 5 watts and I like the AA and AAA charging), so I would still recommend it with the one caveat.

I bought Guide 10 plus but first I was disappointed with it, because it didn't charge my Nokia 808 pureview. It did charge two other phones in the family though. After some searching I read about USB charging standards. It said that data wires should be shorted and Apple used different method in their USB chargers. I carefully checked voltages of Guide 10 plus and Nokias own charger. That was it. Guide uses Apples "standard" and pureview 808 didn't recognize it. I made special usb cord, that has d+ and d- wires shorted in phone end and now pureview gets charged :)
So if someone is having problems with charging it might be that phone thinks it is connected to computer and it doesn't take enough current from usb.

I use this inconjunction with with the Nomad 7 soler panel for fly fishing in remote places.

I love the fact that I can recharge my Phone, my GPS batteries, my Go Pro Hero camera without using my car's electrical system.

I also use it to power a small USB LED light and small USB fan for use in the evening.

I have two, and use one for recharging batteries with the Nomad, and one for charging the deviceis listed above.

It could just be mine but after charging a dozen times or so the battery pack will no longer take a charge. It makes a clicking sound but the indicator light shows that it isn't charging. I received this item as a gift and has been over thirty days since purchase. I waited 15 mins for customer service and then was told to try again later. Awesome product while it lasted. I bought this to serve as a piece of emergency preparedness gear but am having seconds thoughts on buying another replacement, however this is the only portable solar charger on the market that I'm aware of.

I use the individual AA's to run my headlamp. I have 8 GZ AA's. Can I mix a dead battery in with 3 fully charged batteries to bring the single dead battery back to full? Or, do I have to wait until I have 4 dead batteries to fully charge all 4 at once? How can I recharge a single AA?

  the black "holder" is for AAA batteries, the chrome steel cable is for hanging the device. as for "charged by the sun"; you will need the nomad 3.5 or the nomad 7 solar panel to charge the device from the sun. the nomad 7 is larger but shortens the charge time from 6 hours with good sun exposure to 3 hours with good sun exposure.

  You will hear this in alot of things, Tv, iphone chargers, and screens. It is a normal sound. If you hear it very clear and very loud that means somthing may of short circuited. I have one and it has made the noise but not alot and i can barely notice it.

I have the same question as another person from Houston, TX "If the battery pack ran dry could I use alkaline or lithium AA/AAA cells to dump charge my phone.   Staff reviewer said no because they don't know the long term effects.
  
  "Officially" I can't recommend doing it, but personally I wouldn't worry about doing it in a pinch a couple times over the life of the unit. Unless the internal G10+ components are really sensitive, the voltage difference doesn't seem too great that it would cause big issues. Just remember to take them out when you're done so you don't accidentally start charging them!
  
  The other thing of note is that charging your phone puts a heavy load on the batteries and alkalines function significantly less efficiently when under a heavy load. You would see much longer charge times by using NiMH or lithium batteries as compared to using alkaline batteries.

  The Guide 10 works (and has been tested) will all model of iPhones. Too many different variables for me to make a guess, but you note in the reviews that many users report no issues charging their iPhones.

Can you plug your cigarette lighter plug directly into this unit? And in one of the video I believe it says the cigarette plug is used for charging devices but I have an inverter that I would like to use to plug a portable printer in will this work?

  The only output on this unit is the USB port. You might be able to find the right cables to make it work.

Can I power up my digital camera dedicated battery with the Guide 10, with the included DC adapter? I was thinking of using the a DC power inverter so I could plug in my Nikon dedicated battery for charging in the field.

  Yes, it will power on your digital camera but depending on your battery power needs it might take longer than usual to completely charge your batteries.

Q:
Iam sold on the Nomad 13 Panel & see it is compatible with the Guide 10 Plus. I'm going to be climbing Denali. How do these batteries perform in cold temperatures? Once the batts are fully charged up, would it be best for me to take out the 4AA's & keep them in my pocket to keep warm. And then when I am recharging my small devices, insert the AA's into the Guide10 Plus? Have you had any other clients successfully use this product in cold temperatures?

  Thanks for contacting Goal Zero! If the temperature gets below freezing it would be best to make sure that you keep the batteries warm to ensure their performance in harsh conditions. Cold weather obviously will slow the performance of batteries so as long as you keep them warm you should be fine.

  There has not been a reported instance where the batteries fail to work due to the cold. It is always best though to try to keep them warm in extreme temperatures.

  Although the Goal Zero AA batteries are a perfect math for the Guide 10 Plus Battery Pack, you can use other rechargeable batteries as long as they match in both mAH and Volts.

I have a problem with mine, when i put my Micro USB cable and I charge my samsung phone is OK but when I try to do the same with my girlfriend Iphone it makes a high-pitched sound. I tried with 2 original usb cables and have the same result.
