I am a photojournalist and often find myself working in vastly differing regions. Whether it's doing post production work on a train, communicating with my iPhone in a major city, or maintaining my workflow in a third world environment, Goal Zero has just the right tools. s

With the right research and preparation, Goal Zero was the clear way to go on a month long photojournalism trip to the remove village, Alendu, Kenya. I needed enough power to supply two Nikon D3 camera bodies, a MacBook Air for downloading and backing up images, multiple flashlights and audio recorders, as well as my iPod. The medical team I was with came to me regularly with their own iPods and phones, and the Nomad 27 did the trick. I took a Sherpa 120, Nomad 27, and Nomad 13.5 along with me. Since then I have picked up a second 27 and 13.5, and two Sherpa 50 units.

They are super portable, easy to chain & manage, but you have to make sure you are paying attention. User error is a critical misstep in these environments. The rainy season in Kenya limited my daylight exposure, so ensuring that cables were plugged in completely, the angle was right.

Overall, the Nomad 27 and Sherpa 120 were mission critical for me and helped me get the job done in a highly resource limited environment. I would recommend any GoalZero product to anyone.

Great panel: in good sun conditions, it will easily output 15 to 20W, just do not expect a full 27W - if you read the specs above, the 12V output is rated at 24W only, not 27W. Though it is not linked to this panel in particular, the slightest high altitude haze will limit power output instantly. If the weather gets cloudy, then you will only get a few watts, 2 to 5 typically - the Sherpa power pack charging gauge starts blinking as soon as there is enough voltage, but this does not mean significant power is getting through. But a whole day on 5 watts is actually not that bad for charging small devices.

That said, with a Sherpa 120, I recently used this panel during a sailboat trip for 10 days and it easily provided light at night as well as charging for the various electronics - iPad, GPS, phones -. The panel was installed on the deck away from the sails' shade and worked perfectly.

So all in all, this is a good portable panel, able to provide a decent amount of energy in correct conditions, and will be very useful when coupled with a high capacity pack to compensate for periods of overcast weather.

I used this with my family while in Nepal this summer. Could not have done the trip without it! Traditional power there was only on about 6-8 hours a day (if you were in an area that got power).
By using this all day to charge our Sherpa 120, laptops, and other gear, we were able to use them all day and night if needed. Priceless when traveling with kids. It would even charge the Sherpa 120 in very little to no sun (e.g. Cloudy, rainy or foggy.) I am very impressed with our Goal Zero products and would recommend to anyone looking to get out and off the grid.

Hi, I have send an email to your support regarding the nomad27. The unit I have purchased does not have any usb connection and it does not have a cable to convert the 12v dc connector to the cigarette male. This is very misleading as the advertise product shows as a usb port is available and a 12v dc male cigarette connection.Please take note that your manual indicates as 12v dc cigarette adapter to be inside the sales package as well as a usb port capability 5v output. However, the nomad 27 that we have made a purchased has provision for a chain to another nomad panel and with an output to connect it to a sherpa only. Can you please help to resolve it as I need a connection for the 12v dc to make available for charging my 12v devices as well as having a usb5v output to charge a gps. I hope not to just go out and do a force purchase of a sherpa which now is not even available. And if the sherpas are available elsewhere, will I run into another set of problem. Yes granted no one can predict the outcme! But I am sure at least there should be a better quality check prior to shipment of products. As such, I have contacted your support team 3x. And have yet to received any help on these matter.

Your Stated Charge Times are Inaccurate

The specs on your website claim that the Nomad 27 will charge the Sherpa 120 in 4 hours. Then when I got it home and read the manual it says that in reality it takes 10 hours. I tested it out and after 10 hours it only got the Sherpa 120 up to 80%. I tested it by charging it 5 hours one day and 5 hours the next day (10 to 3 mid-day sun) under extremely bright sun conditions, not a cloud in the sky and perfect positioning. It couldn't get any better. It seems that the claims you are making on your website comparison guides are a bit misleading and inaccurate.

My backpack essential!!!

The 27m solar panel is ideal for camping/expeditions and etc.I love how durably this product is. I'm amazed as to how user friendly this is and being functional whether attaching it to the sun roof of a car or simply mounting it to the side of my tent with the direction of the sun in mind. I have even mounted it on my back pack so while trekking it can charge my Sherpa 50 & 120 batteries. This saves me from losing daylight trekking time and allows me to be mobile. The weight is also phenomenal and is not bulky when packing it. I will never leave for a camp trip with out it. Goal Zero makes my backpacking days more comfortable!

Operational when I need it

Just completed a two-week expedition into the mountains of Colorado. The lows averaged around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, which killed my AAA and AA rechargeable batteries fairly fast. Using the 27M Nomad panel I was able to quickly recharge and get back into the action with a dependable GPS, camera etc. Even when the skies were totally overcast the Nomad was able to get a charge into the Sherpa 50. The Estrella LED spotlight was just right for lighting the tent with a cheery glow that really gave a boost to the team's spirits at the end of a long day of climbing mountains. Over the years I've tried other solar power solutions and found the results inadequate. Not so with Goal0! Knowing that my equipment will be operational when I need it gives me the courage to push harder, further and higher than I've ever done before.

  You could connect this to charge your camper battery, but it wouldn't be a good idea. You would need a much larger solar panel as this product does not generate enough power.

  If the radio is on, it will prevent the battery from being overcharged, or perhaps even fully charged, depending on the load presented by the radio. The most likely scenario is that the solar panel will simply extend the run-time of the radio, so you might get a few hours more use. For example, if the repeater radio dissipates 10 watts and the solar panel generates 20-24 watts (such as during high sun), then at most 10-15 watts will go toward charging. However, this can only occur for a few hours a day at best, since less power is produced at other times. On either side of the optimum window, power output will be closer to the 50%-80% range. With any clouds at all, the output may be reduced to 40%, or even much, much less. Thus, there's virtually no risk of overcharging while your repeater is on. The solar panel might enable you to operate with little or no drain on the battery. And to answer your question directly, you can definitely charge your battery as you use it.

  If you are looking to power up your laptop i would suggest checking out the Sherpa 50, you wont need any adapters there. From the tech specs i found it looks like you will be able to use the 12v output to charge up your Powergorilla.

I have a Stanley Automotive jump starter and also Stanley Power station. I would like to charge them with this panel. It comes with a cigarette lighter cord which has the gold tip with a fuse on one end, which would go into the cigarette lighter, 12V, and the silver end goes into the Stanley. You can also charge the Stanley via the wall, with an extension cord. So I wonder can I charge these directly from the panel using the fuse tipped cord I have, or would I need an inverter (I have one that goes into 12v socket) and then would I be able to charge the Stanleys via an AC extension cord? Lastly if none of these options work, if I got say the 350 powerpack and charged that with this panel, can I then charge the Stanleys from that? I just got the Guide 10 adventure kit for my birthday and amd VERY impressed with that little panel.

  The 12v plugs on the Stanley Power Station and Jump Starter are outputs. You would not want to charge through them. They should be charge from an AC outlet from a power pack or from a 115vac inverter. The AC outlet of either the Yeti or Escape 350 is suggested as the best hookup.

  Thanks for contacting Goal Zero! You can definitely charge the Guide 10 and Guide 10 Plus off of the Nomad 27, but it would have to be charged off of the USB port on this panel. There is no adapters or extra cables needed to do so.

  No it cannot. It does not have enough back end power to supply the energy needed to make the DC to AC conversion. I would suggest looking at the Sherpa 50 kit, Escape 150 or Extreme 350 kit. All those have inverters.

  You may have an older panel. If you do not have the USB port than yes it is an older panel. Yes you can use it with the Guardian. Also the output form the panel will plug directly into the input on the Sherpa 120.

  The Nomad 27 is chainable from its 4.7mm solar port. When you connect to the Sherpa 120, that is the same output port. There are additional extension and connector cables available if you need them. The Guardian has a 4.7mm charging port and can be charged by the Nomad 27.

How do i chain nomad 27 and 13 together

  If you have the new 13 then you will need a 8.0mm to 4.7 mm adapter. once you have that you will use the built in chaining ports and you can chain them that way.

can i chain these together, to charge the small battery packs that come with the nomad 7 (guide 10). and to chain them together so i can charge bigger batteries like the sherpa 150 faster.

  You can most definitely chain the Nomad 27 panels together! and this will work with our bigger batteries such as the Escape 150. These will also work with our bigger batteries such as the Extreme 350 and Yeti 1250, but you would need this adapter to use it. http://www.goalzero.com/shop/p/27/Solar-4-7mm-to-Input-8-0-Adapter/6:5/
